5 Ways to Make Winter Cooking Easy

mmm, mmm, good!

January 17, 2019

Even if you love to cook, it’s easy to run out of steam in the wintertime. It’s cold and dark, people are tired at the end of the day and quite frankly, after Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, we’ve all had enough turkey noodle soup. Don’t turn to take-out for dinner – let us help you with these easy winter cooking tips!

Make use of kitchen tools

The classic Crockpot and other slow cookers, the Instant Pot…whatever you’ve got, make use of it! There’s nothing like coming home to the smell of beef stew or butter chicken simmering away in the Crockpot, and the Instant Pot makes getting dinner ready quick and easy. Give your oven and stove a break, especially on those busy weeknights – winter is all about healthy, convenient comfort foods!

Try batch cooking

Making Shepherd’s pie, a chicken casserole or a pot of chili? Make enough for two or three meals – you can use it for lunches or a second dinner and freeze whatever’s left. The same goes for many soups, stews and meat dishes that freeze and reheat nicely. It takes very little effort to double or triple a recipe, and you’ll thank yourself later when “cooking dinner” means reheating a delicious meal you’ve already made.

Order your meat online

Our Farm to City program lets customers stay in and skip the store. Order on your lunch break at work, when your kids are napping or in the evening, when you’re lounging in your sweats on the couch. We’re open 24 hours a day at VGFarmtoCity.ca and yes, we deliver to your door!

Don’t forget your BBQ in winter

Everyone barbeques in the summer but many forget that winter bbq’ing is just as great. Throw some burgers, chicken, pork chops, steaks or sausages on the grill – serve along with some simple baked potatoes and veggies, and you’ve got an easy and amazing meal that reminds you of warmer days.

Try our ready-made meals

Our retail locations in Simcoe and Stoney Creek have ready-to-serve meals available in the deli section (chilled but not frozen). Additionally, both locations have a great selection of frozen meals that have been cooked with love in our stores by the VG Meats team. Look for our lasagna, shepherd’s pie, pulled pork and other customer favourites. They’re fast and easy, and a great dinner for the whole family! Enjoy.
