3 summer food ideas for your family

August 8, 2019

Summer is made for BBQs and outdoor meals but sometimes, you fall into a routine and find yourself eating the same meals again and again. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – if you’re happy eating steak four nights a week, go for it! – but sometimes you need to shake things up a bit. Here are some fresh ideas for feeding your family this summer.

Kebabs

Kebabs are a summer staple because they’re fun, versatile and full of flavour. They’re also super easy to prepare and throw on the grill. Try chicken marinated in your favourite spice rub (we love using boneless thighs for kebabs) or pork marinated in Souvlaki seasoning. Our stewing beef makes a perfect kebab – just season it, pop it on a skewer with some peppers, onions and mushrooms and you’re good to know! Kebabs are great with a simple green salad or served with corn on the cob and a baked potato. Yum!

Bowls

Bowls are perfect for family dinners because everyone ends up with a custom combination for their taste buds. Plus, they’re tasty, satisfying and healthy! Start by preparing your favourite grain (rice and quinoa both work well) and getting some chicken, beef or pork on the grill. Chop up some lettuce and your favourite fresh or roasted veggies. Grab any extras your family enjoys – diced avocado, microgreens, fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley, seeds or toasted nuts, tortilla strips or crunchy fried onions – whatever works. You can even add unexpected items like mango or pineapple! Place it all out on the table and let each family member assemble their own unique bowl. Top with a bit of homemade crema, salsa verde, salad dressing or stir-fry sauce and you’re all set. Try an Asian-inspired bowl, a Tex-Mex bowl or create your own culinary masterpiece – delish!

Fajitas

Tacos are magic, but don’t forget their delicious cousin – the fajita. Simply marinate some chicken or flank steak in fajita seasoning and a bit of olive oil and then toss it on the BBQ. While that’s cooking, slice some bell peppers and sweet onions, drizzle with olive oil and add them to the grill (wrap them in foil or use a grilling pan to avoid a mess). Warm up your tortillas, assemble and serve with sour cream, salsa and hot sauce. The taste is great and clean-up is a breeze!
