It’s no secret that family is huge to VG Meats. After all, we’re a partnership of four brothers with a long history of farming, butchering and working together. We’ve written about how our grandfather started VG Meats many years ago, and how our father taught us everything we know (we’ve tried to return the favour). But through all of our successes (and the occasional failure) we’ve relied on the hard work and support of one person: Mom VG (or as others call her, Joan Van Groningen).
Speaking on behalf of my brothers and I (Kevin), my mom has been there since day one. Her commitment to our family is amazing to see, both in terms of the business and as a loving mother of four. This is a woman who is truly dedicated to her family, and demonstrates it every day of our lives. She works hard at home and on the farm, and still finds to time to connect with all of her children. Nowadays, she’s not only a wife and mother to the VG family – she’s also a grandmother to 8 VG children (the next generation of farmers, perhaps)!
Growing up, I watched my mom work hard every day and it made a big impression on me. Now, as an adult, I can still count on my mom to be there every step of the way. While her four sons have taken on the responsibility of the VG Meats business, she continues to make things possible by helping to care for her grandkids. They sure are tired out after a day with nanny! She is truly the heart and soul of our family, and we love her to the moon and back.
This Mother’s Day, don’t forget to celebrate the special moms in your life – and not just your own mother. Your grandma, that special aunt or family friend, the mother of your own children – they all deserve recognition (and flowers, a heartfelt card, and a morning to sleep in). Why not try serving the special mom in your life some of our delicious beef bacon alongside her favourite eggs, fresh fruit and toast? Or, cook up some cinnamon French toast or a nice stack of pancakes with beef bacon and maple syrup on the side. It’s an easy but delicious way to show your love and appreciation. Or, go all out and try working beef bacon into some of these great recipes.
Thanks for reading, and thanks to you, Mom, for all you do. Happy Mother’s Day!
